Bigger is better. Go big or go home. Big bucks. Makin’ the big time. Big break. Big shot. The big kahuna. Big, bigger, biggest. Dream big!
As we walk into a new year, many of us will take stock and set some goals. Often these goals are about bigger, better, more. Well, except for the masses, no pun intended, who will resolve to shrink their bodies, I suppose, though even they are vowing to commit to more: more self-control, more exercise, and all too often, more beating the hell out of and shaming themselves for taking up space in the world.
To those of you hoping to have a big year, I wish you the very best. If it means something to you and you want it, I hope you get it and it brings you more joy and satisfaction than you could have possibly imagined. Bless you.
My intention is to go small. Very, very small. Tiny. Intimate. I plan to live in moments. Not days or hours or even minutes. Moments. All of them. I’m a pretty present person. There are fewer photos of events in my life that held meaning for me than there might have been because I wanted to see and feel them right then. Fully steeped, soaking it in.
That’s my shift for the new year. Taking that sense of presence and dialing it way down. Feeling it all, every single bit. Moment by moment, treating each as the gift that it is. I’ve lived long enough to know that some moments are easier than others. Some are beautiful in their joyfulness, some are excruciating. But come what may, my goal is to remain fully present in each. Bless me, too.

I like big but I hear you!!
I am also dialing down a bit in 2024. Focusing more on saving for some important events (daughter going to college in 2025, possible overseas move in a few years), making my house more of a home and spending more quality time with my kids before we scatter and that becomes harder.
There is a word for the kind of intimate, special moments I think you are describing that I discovered in 2023. It’s ‘hygge.’ You will probably appreciate the vibe. ❤

I just looked hygge up. That’s exactly it! It gets bonus points for the fact that it’s pronounced “hooga.” 😀
Because travel has been so important to you and you’ve incorporated it into your children’s childhhods, your kids are almost certainly good and comfortable explorers, which is wonderful. Roots and wings!
I often feel like you and I are different sides of the same coin. We share many of the basics–deep love for our children, similar spiritual paths, and matching code of ethics–but we express them in the world differently. It’s kind of lovely, really.

Ah! Living in moments is what I’m trying to do too, E. My word of the year is ‘intentional’ and I’m hoping to make every moment matter!
Wishing you all things wonderful in 2024! Thanks for being such an inspiration.
